A collection of world-famous boxers joined with local and state politicians and a large crowd of well-wishers for the ceremonial unveiling of a striking 10-foot statue of heavyweight champion James J. Braddock. The inspiration for the film “Cinderella Man,” Braddock was a North Bergen resident who overcame overwhelming odds to defeat Max Baer for the heavyweight title in 1935, and the statue is now a proud centerpiece of the Hudson County park that bears his name.
