Memorial Day Ceremony is Followed by Spring BBQ

Posted May 29, 2026

The Town of Guttenberg once again observed Memorial Day with a ceremony outside Town Hall on Monday, May 25, 2026. Mayor Wayne Zitt and Council Members Richard Delafuente, Monica Fundora, John Habermann, William Hokien, and Juana Malave hosted the event honoring service members who lost their lives serving our country.

Town Administrator Cosmo Cirillo served as emcee, with “Junior Councilman” John Daley Habermann, Jr. leading the Pledge of Allegiance and Angela Marie Cirillo offering the National Anthem. Also providing spoken tributes were Police Chief Frank Pelaez and Revenue & Finance Director Hiram Gonzalez, himself a veteran of the Marine Corps.

The event featured honorary wreaths in tribute to all six branches of the armed forces and concluded with representatives from North Hudson Regional Fire & Rescue ringing the ceremonial bell and GPD Officer Ricardo Acosta playing “Taps.” The Guttenberg Police Honor Guard presented the colors.

Following the service, residents were treated to free burgers and hot dogs at a town-sponsored barbecue over an open grill. Picnic tables were set up in the Town Hall parking lot and everyone enjoyed the fine spring afternoon while mingling with family, friends, and neighbors.

Free transportation was provided from all senior bus stops.
