Police Officer Byron Dominguez Selected as Officer of the Year for 2024
Posted June 26, 2025The Guttenberg Police Department’s Command Staff has presented Officer Byron Dominguez with the agency’s “Officer of the Year” award for 2024.
Officer Dominguez was assigned as the Guttenberg Police Department’s School Resource Officer and Juvenile Liaison at the Anna L. Klein School in September, 2023. This assignment ensured the safety of the school’s students and faculty, while allowing a streamlined method for the department to address any law enforcement-related concerns within the school. Officer Dominguez’s efforts and dedication to the students, staff, and parents of this community are extraordinary. He created a mentorship program within the school with school faculty assistance, which was geared toward early intervention with students who were struggling with their grades or with disciplinary issues.
Officer Dominguez has been commended on numerous occasions, not only by the GPD, but more importantly by the students and parents he interacted with to create a better environment for everyone.
Officer Dominguez began his law enforcement career as a Class I Special Law Enforcement Officer with the Cliffside Park Police Department in January of 2016. He was hired as a full-time police officer with the Guttenberg Police Department in July, 2018 and assigned to the department’s Patrol Division.
Officer Dominguez’s performance as a patrol officer was exceptional, which led to his assignment to the agency’s Criminal Investigations Bureau in 2020. In that role he attended various intensive training courses for narcotics investigations, major crimes investigations, crime scene processing, sexual assault investigations, digital media and cyber crimes investigations, and notably, the Law Enforcement Against Drugs & Violence (LEAD) training course, certifying him as an instructor for grades K-12.
Officer Dominguez’s contributions to this community have been unparalleled and should be used as an example of what can be accomplished when the GPD and Board of Education work together to serve our younger residents.
