Beware of Scam Text Messages Demanding Payment for Fake Tolls
Posted January 31, 2025Residents are being targeted by scammers sending fraudulent text messages that claim payment is owed for unpaid road tolls. These messages are part of a growing scam operation aimed at stealing personal information and funds. If you receive such a text, do not click on any links or provide any personal or financial information.
Be cautious of unsolicited text messages claiming you owe money. Always confirm payment requests directly through official toll agency channels. Manually type the toll agency’s website URL into your browser or call their verified customer service number to check your account.
If you receive a suspicious text, report it promptly. Forward the message to 7726 (SPAM) and notify agencies such as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), and NJCCIC. Stay vigilant to safeguard your personal information.
