Community Center Hosts Town’s First Autism Awareness Event

Posted April 28, 2023
Guttenberg’s first Autism Awareness event attracted many vendors and residents to the Gerald R. Drasheff Community Center on Thursday, Apr. 20. Held in conjunction with the town’s monthly Wellness Day, the event offered plenty of educational tools and giveaways for parents as well as general healthcare advice and services for everyone.

Guttenberg Police Local 88 cosponsored the event with the town and North Hudson Community Action Corporation (NHCAC) and were on hand selling shirts to raise funds for autism awareness. There were games and activities for kids organized by the teachers at Anna L. Klein School, and NHCAC’s cheerful bumblebee mascot took photos with families.

Other vendors with tables around the perimeter of the gym distributing information and handouts included Amerigroup, AT&T, Best Home Care, Community Care Partners, Head Start, Hudson County Community College, Hudson Pride, Meadowlands YMCA, North Jersey Foot and Ankle Center, and Verizon.

Council Members Richard Delafuente, John Habermann, William Hokien, and Juana Malave dropped by to visit with attendees, along with ALK Principal Keith Petry, Public Events Coordinator Marisol Montanez, Police Lt. Rafael Martinez and Lt. Frank Palaez, and many other officers, public employees, and volunteers.
