ALK Students Hold Rally Supporting Ukraine
Posted May 27, 2022Anna L. Klein School students in grades 5 through 8 participated in an event in solidarity with the people of Ukraine on Thursday, May 26, 2022. Originally scheduled as a march from the school to Monument Park, the event was changed at the last minute in response to the tragic events in Uvalde and was held inside the new gym in the Community Center, complete with a police presence outside to ensure safety.
Prior to the event, the students created signs and posters expressing their support for Ukrainians undergoing vicious assault by Russian forces, and condemning war in all its forms. The students then brought their signs to the gym and proudly displayed them by grade.
Seventh grade Social Studies Teacher Matthew Rivera served as host for the event, making sure the students were fully aware of the events taking place overseas. Guttenberg School Superintendent Dr. Michelle Rosenberg, whose dissertation was on Holocaust education in New Jersey schools, put the conflict in a larger context, with participation from individual students explaining the meaning of genocide and the need to speak up and show public support for oppressed people, nations, and communities everywhere.
