Free Caption Phones & Captioning Service Available to Hearing-Impaired Residents
Posted September 19, 2019ClearCaptions representative Terry Hurley met with Guttenberg residents on Friday, Sept. 13, 2019 in the Senior Building to demonstrate the $500 caption phone and captioning services available for free to eligible individuals thanks to a federal government grant. Anyone with a hearing impairment or a need for captioning services on their landline or iPhone is eligible. (Android services are not yet available and Internet service is required for landline service.)
The caption phone comes with a touch screen display and built-in tutorials to lead you through the set-up process and teach you how to use the phone. There is also a button to call for live customer service or help. Once set up, calls are routed through the ClearCaptions call center, where a representative will transcribe the conversation and send it to the phone display.
Calls are recorded in the phone and you can save or delete them. The phone also has an answering machine with captioned messages and you can adjust the font size or color.
The phone and service are free to all eligible residents. Federal law prohibits anyone but registered users with hearing loss from using Internet Protocol (IP) captions telephones with the captions turned on.
ClearCaptions is an independent company that is paid a fee by the federal government for each minute of captions generated. Captioning is currently available in English only.
