Rose Gunther Honored as One of Hudson County’s ‘Visionary Women’

Posted March 28, 2019

Rose Gunther, who just celebrated her 100th birthday and is still actively managing various real estate properties, was recognized for her long and colorful career when she was honored at one of 13 “Visionary Women” at the annual Women’s History Month award ceremony at the historic Brennan Courthouse in Jersey City. She was presented with the Guttenberg Trailblazer of the Year Award by Guttenberg Mayor Wayne Zitt.

Earlier this year Mayor Zitt presented Rose with the key to the Town of Guttenberg, as a lifelong resident who owned and ran businesses and supported the local community for many decades. As a teenager Rose worked at her father’s beer and soda distribution business during WWII, then later as a secretary and bookkeeper in a local yarn mill. She helped her husband, George, launch and run a successful ice cream truck business before opening the popular clothing store Gunther’s Bargain Corner at 68th Street and Park Avenue, continuing to work there until 2011, when she closed the store and finally “retired” at age 93.

A large crowd of local officials, friends, family, and supporters attended the ceremony on Tuesday, Mar. 19, 2019 and gave a standing ovation to the recipients. Some of the other presenters included Hudson County Executive Thomas DeGise, Hudson County Democratic Organization Chairwoman Amy DeGise, Freeholders Caridad Rodriguez and Anthony Romano, and Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner. Undersheriff Francine Shelton served as emcee.
