Officers from the Guttenberg Police Department met with several dozen town residents in the community room of Herman G. Klein Towers at 7005 Boulevard East for “Coffee with a Cop” on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017. Over free beverages and refreshments, the residents had an opportunity to get to know the local cops and share any concerns or issues with them personally.
The national Coffee with a Cop program was launched in 2011 as a way for local police to interact more successfully with the citizens they serve each day. The program is designed to bring community members and law enforcement officers together in a safe and cordial environment to foster trust and cooperation. The informal sessions have no agendas and no speeches, just personal interactions between residents and police.
Guttenberg holds periodic Coffee with a Cop sessions at different locations around town. The last was about three months ago. This particular session was held on Oct. 4, national Coffee with a Cop day.
Among the many residents attending the event was Carmen Castro, who took the opportunity to reunite with officers who responded after a horrendous accident in August of last year, when Castro was pinned under a pickup truck and sustained severe head injuries. She tearfully embraced officers at the event and thanked them for saving her life.
